Carbon reduction and net zero
NRS announced its first Net Zero Carbon Reduction Plan in the 2021/22 financial year — a major milestone in our sustainability journey and the first step toward achieving net zero.
NRS is committed to working alongside other UK organisations to achieve the Government’s target of a 100% reduction in net UK carbon emissions by 2050 (based on 1990 levels), and to align with the NHS target of becoming net zero by 2045.
We are going further — committing to achieving net zero emissions by 31 March 2030, 20 years ahead of the UK Government’s target and 15 years ahead of the NHS target.
Our goals:
-
90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030
-
Offsetting residual Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2028 via high-quality verified offsets
-
77% overall reduction across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2030, offsetting any residuals via nature-based or direct air capture projects

Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked targets designed to be a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. Established by the United Nations in 2015, the goals aim for achievement by 2030.
NRS has chosen specific SDGs to align with and has incorporated them into our ESG objectives.
